Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To perform detection of breakdown, which is excellent in safety, without the danger of electric leakage, by detecting the reflected light in plastic optical fibers, which are arranged along the entire length of a power transmission fiber. CONSTITUTION:Two pieces of plastic optical fibers 2A and 2B are longitudinally arranged along the outer surface of a laser light power transmitting fiber 1. The outer surface of the fibers is coated by a protecting film. When the transmitting fiber 1 is broken and the laser beam leaks, the plastic optical fibers 2A and 2B are immediately burned by the laser beam. A light signal is transmitted by a control device 6, passes through the optical fiber 2A, is reflected by a prism 3, and is returned to the control device 6 through the optical fiber 2B. When the optical fiber 2A or 2B is burned, the amount of reflected light passing the optical fiber 2B is decreased. When the decrease in the amount of light is detected by the control device 6, a control signal is outputted, a laser oscillator 5 is stopped, and the leakage of the laser light to the outside is prevented.
