Production of double refractive plate
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a double refractive plate which is inexpensive, has no limits in size and has optional retardation by depositing a dielectric material by evaporation diagonally on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:If a dielectric material 2 is deposited by evaporation on a substrate 1 at an incident angle theta thereto, the vapor-deposition film 3 formed in such a way has the refractive index larger in an X direction than in a Y direction. The difference in the optical path between the slowest oscillation direction (X) and fastest oscillation direction (Y) when light passes the film 3 in a Z direction is referred to as ''retardation''. A vapor deposition device 11 is constituted of a vacuum bell-jar 12, a vapor source 13 and a substrate mounting part 14. The part 14 has a substrate 15 of glass plate or the like to be subjected to vapor deposition. The inside of the bell-jar 12 is kept at <=10<-5>mm.Hg degree of vacuum. The substrate 15 is so disposed that its surface faces at the angle theta to the source 13. If the vapor-depositing material is evaporated, the vapor ascends straightly and sticks on the surface of the substrate from the angle theta to the vertical direction of the surface, that is, the incident angle theta for vapor deposition.
