Pyrimidine derivative

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The 5-substituted-2-(4'-substituted biphenylyl)pyrimidine and 5-substituted-2-[4'-(trans-4''-substituted cyclohexyl)phenyl]pyrimidine of formula I (R1 and R2 are 1-10C alkyl or alkyloxy; the group of formula II is cyclohexane ring or benzene ring). EXAMPLE:5-Hexyl-2-(4'-pentylbiphenylyl)pyrimidine. USE:A liquid crystal substance having remarkably large anisotropy of refractive index, low viscosity for a tricyclic compound, considerably broad liquid crystal temperature range, and excellent stability. PROCESS:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reducing the compound of formula IV which can be derived from the compound of formula III in 4-steps, with hydrogen in the presence of palladium-carbon (catalyst). The compound has excellent compatibility to the other liquid crystal substances, improves the responce characteristics, contrast, and sharpness of the liquid crystal composition, and extends its liquid crystal temperature range.
