Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula (R is bivalent or trivalent 1-12C hydrocarbon residue which may have ether bond, halogen, etc.; n is 2 or 3). EXAMPLE:Ethylene glycol di-(1-cyanobutadiene-1,3)-carboxylic acid ester. USE:Useful as an adhesive and coating agent, especially a crosslinking agent of conventional adhesives. It gives a curved product having high chemical resistance and heat resistance. PROCESS:The compound of formula can be prepared by (1) reacting acrolein as an unsaturated carbonyl compound with cyanoacetic acid ester in a solvent such as 1,4-dioxane in the presence of a metallic salt catalyst such as zinc chloride, (2) mixing the resultant mixture with a solvent which selectively dissolves the reaction product, (3) extracting with dilute hydrochloric acid or acidic methanol several times, and (4) evaporating the solvent from the organic layer.
