Preparation of acrylamide
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled water-soluble compound useful as a high polymer flocculating agent, etc. in high yield, by using acrylonitrile purified to have a content of ciscrotononitrile <= a specified value, reacting it catalytically with water in the presence of a copper catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In preparing acrylamide by reacting acrylonitrile with water catalytically in the presence of a copper catalyst (e.g., Raney copper), acrylonitrile purified to have <=5ppm ciscrotononitrile is used as the acrylonitrile. Acryliamide is widely used as a high polymer flocculating agent for waste water treatment, etc. currently and the high polymer flocculating agent is a water- soluble ultrahigh polymer and required to have >=10,000,000 molecular weight. By making the content of ciscrotononitrile in acrylonitrile of raw material <=5ppm, the desired water-soluble compound can be obtained without subjecting acrylonitrile to acidic treatment during preparation process and the reaction product to purification process through recrystallization.
