Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To attain optical transmission with high efficiency, by using a star coupler of n:3-port for transmission and reception. CONSTITUTION:A star coupler 3 for transmission of n:3-port couples transmitted optical signals x1-xn from n sets of terminals and branches it into three ports 3a-3c. A reception star coupler 4 branches optical signals on three ports 4a-4c as received optical signals to n sets of terminals. The ports 3a, 4a of each coupler are coupled to an incoming optical fiber transmission line 1 and the ports 3b, 4b are coupled to an outgoing optical fiber transmission line 2, and the ports 3c, 4c are mutually coupled via an optical loss section 5. The n-set of terminal connected to the couplers 3, 4 can mutually be communicated via the section 5 and can perform communication with the terminals accommodated with the other coupler via optical fibers 1, 2.
