Preparation of silicon-containing modified polyvinyl alcohol
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound exhibiting excellent surface strength and barrier property when used as a paper coating agent, etc., by copolymerizing a vinyl ester with a specific silicon-containing polymerizable monomer in the presence of an alcohol, and saponifying the copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl ester is copolymerized with a silicon-containing polymerizable monomer of formula (R<1> is H or methyl; R<2> is H, halogen or lower alkyl; R<3> is lower alkyl; n is 0-2) (e.g. vinyl triacetoxy silane) in the presence of an alcohol using a redical polymerization initiator. The resultant copolymer is saponified with a saponication catalyst such as sodium hydroxide, to obtain the objective product.
