Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce the amount of heat generation and to improve the sealing properties of rod packings by a method wherein reliefs are provided on the outer peripheries of the end surfaces of rod packings connecting to lower pressure side packing cases, respectively, so that the end surfaces of the rod packings and the corners of the packing cases do not come into contact with each other respectively. CONSTITUTION:The rod packings 1a, 1b and 2 are deformed as at 7 due to the difference in pressure between the high pressure side H and the low pressure side L of the compressor but due to the provision of the reliefs 11 on the rod packings 1a and 1b, there is no fear that the deformed sections 7 comes into contact with the corners 8 of the packing cases 3b and 3c. Further, due to the provision of the reliefs 12 on the packings 1a and 1b, the sectional areas of contact between the end surfaces 9 of the rod packings 1a and 1b and the packing cases 3b and 3c are reduced to bring the formers 9 into contact with the latters 3b and 3c in a favorable condition so that the following up of the rod packings with respect to the shaft 5 is improved and the connecting surfaces of the rod packings 1a and 1b are held tightly to those of the packing cases 3b and 3c while they keep always their correct configurations, to thereby improve the sealing properties of the rod packings and to reduce the amount of heat generation.
