Magnetic coating composition
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic coating compsn. for a magnetic recording medium excellent in dispersibility of ferromagnetic compd. (metal) in fine powder, prepared by mixing a partially oxidized nitrocellulose with finely powdered ferromagnetic compd. (metal). CONSTITUTION:A partially oxidized nitrocellulose with a nitrogen content of 8% or higher and a carboxyl group content of 2mmol per 100g of nitrocellulose is prepared, e.g., by dissolving nitrocellulose in an organic solvent and adding nitrogen oxide, hypochlorous acid, chloric acid, permagnetic acid, dichromic acid or hydrogen peroxide, followed by heating. The resultant partially oxidized nitrocellulose is mixed with a ferromagnetic compd. in fine powder (e.g. gamma- Fe2O3 or Fe3O4) or a ferromagnetic metal in fine powder (e.g. Fe or Fe-Co) and, when necessary, a synthetic resin binder (e.g., polyester polyurethane resin) to produce the titled compsn.
