Emulsion polymerization method

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a polymeric dispersion capable of giving coating films having improved water, solvent and blocking resistance by the addition of a hydrazine derivative thereto, by emulsion polymerizing a monomer containing a double bond in the presence of a specific water-soluble copolymer containing carbonyl groups as a dispersing agent. CONSTITUTION:(B) Au unsaturated monomer is emulsion polymerized or copolymerized in the presence of (A) a water-soluble copolymer, containing carbonyl groups, (i) 0.5-99.5wt% monomeric units containing carbonyl groups, one or more aldo or keto groups and one double bond, (ii) 99.5-0.5wt% monomeric units, e.g. 3-5C monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid, amide, N-alkyl and/or N-alkylol derivative thereof or monoolefinic sulfonic acid, and (iii) 0- 70wt% monomeric units, e.g. a 1-8C alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid, vinyl aromatic compound, vinyl halide, ethylene, (meth)acrylonitrile or 1,3-butadiene, as a dispersing agent.
