Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain equal contrast as transmission and reflection types by disposing a dynamic scattering mode cell on the outside surface of a liquid crystal display element, and controlling the applied voltage across the transparent electrodes formed on the opposite inside surfaces thereof. CONSTITUTION:Transparent counter electrodes 12, 13 are provided over the entire opposite surfaces of opposing glass substrates 10, 11 on the back surface of the substrate 2 of a liquid crystal display element 8, and a dynamic scattering mode cell 16 sealed with a nematic liquid crystal 15 is constituted therebetween and is disposed in close contact with the element 8 via a white diffusion film 17. A light source 21 for transmission type is provided behind the semitransmittable reflection film 20 on the back surface of the cell 16. When the voltage of a power source 18 is applied across the counter electrodes 12, 13 of the cell 16, the cell 16 clouds and functions as a reflecting plate for the element 8, thereby providing a bright display as reflection type. When the voltage is turned off, the cell 16 turns transparent and provides a bright display as transmission type through the element 8, thus the equal constrast is obtained for both modes.
