Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To improve the magnetic performance of a permanet magnet by preparing columnar crystal in the structure of an ingot with an alloy of Sm 2 Co 17 containing Sm, Co, Cu, Fe and one or more of Zr, Ti, Hf, Ta, Nb and V. CONSTITUTION: A composition containing by weight 21W28% of Sm, 3.0W10% of Cu, 14.0W35% of Fe and 0.5W5.0% of one more of Zr, Ti, Hf, Ta, Nb and V, and the residue of Co is molten by high frequency wave, for example, in Ar gas atmosphere to prepare an ingot of Sm 2 Co 17 crystal. The macro structure of the ingot is mainly columnar structure. Preferably the columnar structure should contain more than 50W70%. This can be performed by suitably selecting the melting temperature, casting method, the cooling speed of the mold, etc. The magnetic characteristics of the permanent magnet can be improved by magnetizing this alloy.
