Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To provide an automatic transmission which has a compact constitution and can obtain a wide range of continuous transmission ratios by providing power connecting and disconnecting means in two step manners. CONSTITUTION: An input shaft 10 and an output shaft 11 of an automatic transmission TM 1 are transmittably coupled through the first power transmission system with a reduction gear train 30 as the main constituent or the second power transmission system with a stepless speed change gear 40 as the main constituent, and the maximum reduction ratio of the stepless speed change gear 40 and the reduction ratio of the reduction gear train 30 are made to agree with each other. Then driver operates a shift lever (not shown) into N, l, D and R positions (not shown) to work the automatic transmission TM 1 . With the shift lever operated into the 1 and R positions, the torque T of a crank shaft 12 is developed to a high torque, between 4T and 2T, by a torque converter 20 and the reduction gear train 30 and transmitted to the output shaft 11 and then through a planet gears 60 and the final reduction gear to the front axle.
