Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a quartz pipe with high dimensional accuracy suitable for use as a material for an optical fiber by reacting starting material such as SiCl4 by lame hydrolysis or other method to form a medium, which is then converted into a semisintered body, mechanically worked into pipe form, and sintered. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4 or the like is converted into SiO2-base medium by flame hydrolysis or a CVD method as follows: SiCl4 liq. 2 in bubbler 1 provided with heater 4 is fed to burner 5 by carrier gas O2 3 together with H2 gas 7 and reacted to form medium 6. Medium 6 is pulled up while being rotated as it grows, and it is converted into semisintered body 11 in heating furnace 10 without causing vitrification. Body 11 is mechanically worked into pipelike semicintered body 11. After carrying out this operation at least once or several times the resulting semisintered body is heated in a sintering furnace or with a glass lathe until it is vitrified thoroughly. At this time, the compressive percentage can be restricted within a predetermined range, so quartz pipes of various sizes are obtd. easily.
