Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To produce a water-absorbing material being excellent in absorptivity for brine, etc., and biodegradability and showing good gel strength when swollen and high safety, by reacting a cationic polysaccharide with an anionic polysacchride. CONSTITUTION: (A) Ninety-five to five (95W5)wt% of a natural or semisynthetic cationic polysacchride such as chitosan or aminocellulose is reacted with (B) 5W 95wt% of a natural or synthetic anionic polysaccharide such as xanthane gum or GMC, in an aqueous medium. Then, the product is precipitated by addition of a hydrophilic solvent such as methyl alcohol or acetone, and the precipitate is separated, dried and pulverized, or the reaction mixture is concentrated. EFFECT: Absorption for blood or urine is good, and the blood or urine absorbed does not ooze out upon application of a slight pressure.
