Production of optical fiber base material

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the target finish diameter of high accuracy by measuring the diameter on the way of the hot-melt drawn-down part of the base material and controlling the stretching rate of the stretching bar or pipe with the thus measured value. CONSTITUTION:A stretching base material 1 comprising glass, quartzbase glass, quartz or the like is heated and is stretched by running a motor 11 at a predetermined speed and moving a chuck 7 toward the right. At this time, the on-the-way diameter is measured with a drawing-down on-the-way diameter measuring device 8' and the stretching speed is so controlled that the said diameter becomes less than 1.5 times the finish diameter. Thereby, the finish diameter of high accuracy is obtained.
