Optical fiber
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To achieve the stabilization of the temperature coefficient of phase constant by covering the circumference of an optical fiber of a diameter (d) having a core and clad comprising quartz glass to more than thickness (d) with a plastic material of ≤1.0kg/mm 2 in Young's modulus. CONSTITUTION: The circumference of an optical fiber of a diameter (d) having a core 1 and clad 2 comprising quartz glass is covered with a plastic material 3, such as silicone rubber, of ≤1kg/mm 2 in Young's modulus, to more than thickness (d). If necessary, it is further covered with hard plastics 4 of a higher Young's modulus, to thickness of more than (d). In this case, the temperature coefficient of the optical fiber phase constant may be suppressed to about 6×10 -6 °C -1 intrinsic to quartz glass. Even when shrinkage of the plastics 3 occurs at a low temperature in the case of having the covering 4, the quartz part crooks in the plastics 3 of a lower Young's modulus, thus the optical length of the quartz part does not receive temperature change directly. Thereby, the stabilization of the temperature coefficient of the phase constant is achieved. COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
