Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To assure superior flexibility and high strength by arranging silicon carbide fibers through knitting and braiding or the like around an optical fiber and further covering the circumference thereof with a thermoplastic resin. CONSTITUTION: After one or a plural layers of plastic coverings 2 are preferably applied on an optical fiber 2 for the purpose of protecting the surface of the fiber, the bundled yarn 3 bundled with a plurality of silicon carbide fibers is placed longitudinally thereon through twisting or braiding; further, the circumference thereof is covered with a thermoplastic resin 4. A combination of a thermosetting resin of the inside layer and a thermoplastic resin of the outside layer is desirable as the plastic covering 2, and polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane alone or a combination of these and additive resins, inorganic fillers, organic fillers etc. is selected ?as 4.
