Melt nitriding method for aluminum or aluminum alloy
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To give aluminum or its alloy excellent wear resistance, by melting the aluminum or its alloy with arc heat in an atmosphere composed of inert gas and nitrogen gas, then by repeating the melting under different arcing conditions after slow cooling. CONSTITUTION:Aluminum or its alloy is heated and melted with arc heat in an atmosphere composed of nitrogen gas and inert gas such as argon, helium. After slow cooling, 1-5 runs of melting are repeated under different arcing conditions with arc current 25-85% the arc current at melt nitriding. Time of heating and melting is about 30-90sec. For example, inert gas is blown into a torch 2 through a gas pipe 4, then arc 6 is generated between a tungsten electrode 3 and material 1 to be treated to form a molten pool 7. To perform linear melt nitriding of the material 1 to be treated, one place of the material 1 is melted for about 30sec only in early stage, then the material 1 is conveyed at about 5mm./sec speed, while other conditions being changed.
