Production of optical fiber having elliptical core

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having an elliptical core by inserting a quartz glass base material of a nearly round section into a quartz glass tube which is elliptical in the outside circumference of its section and is nearly round in the inside circumference, melting these by heating to form a preform, heating the preform and drawing the same. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass optical fiber base material comprising a round core 11 and clad 12 is inserted into a quartz glass tube 21 which is nearly round in the inside circumference and is elliptical in the outside circumference, whereby a composite body is formed. This is melted by heating while evacuating, whereby the solid preform having no clearances is made. when this preform is heated at a high temp. and is drew, the outside circumference of a fiber jacket 43 becomes nearly round owing to surface tension and the elliptical core optical fiber having an elliptical core 41 is obtained.
