Polymerization of ethylene
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To produce an ethylene polymer at a high temperature and pressure, by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a specific Ziegler type catalyst under conditions of a high temperature and pressure. CONSTITUTION: A Ziegler type catalyst is obtained by combining (A) an organometallic compound containing a metal selected from the IWIII groups of the periodic table, such as triethylaluminum, or an alkylsiloxane derivative such as trimethyldimethylsiloxane with (B) a solid composition prepared by contacting (a) an Mg compound such as MgCl 2 or Mg(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 with (b) an alkoxy group-containing compound of a metal selected from the IWIV group metals of the periodic table, such as Li(OC 2 H 5 ) and (c) a liquid halogen compound of Ti or V, such as TiCl 4 , for 10minW5hr at -50W200°C. Then 5W100wt% of ethylene and 95W0wt% of at least one α-olefinic compound are (co)polymerized at a pressure of at least 200kg/cm 2 , pref., 500W2,500kg/cm 2 and a temperature of at least 125°C, pref., 150W350°C.
