Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:An ester compound of formula (R is 1W10C straight chain alkyl or alkoxy). EXAMPLE: 4-n-octylbenzoic acid 3'-chloro-4'-cyanophenyl ester. USE: A compound which imparts positive dielectric anisotropy to a liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy, or increases the dielectric anisotropy of a liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy, increases the dielectric anisotropy of a liquid crystal composition having positive dielectric anisotropy. The driving voltage of the compound is lower than that of the normal Np-type liquid crystal. The clearing point of the composition containing the compound is higher than those containing a benzonitrile compound. PROCESS: The titled compound is prepared, easily, by the conventional esterification reaction using 4-n-alkylbenzoic acid chloride and 3-chloro-4-cyanophenol. COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
