Preparation of multicomponent glass fiber preform rod
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To prepare the titled preform rod having excellent characteristics, in high efficiency, by dissolving soot glass obtained by the flame hydrolysis of chlorine-free raw materials of glass and a fluorine-containing compound in an alkaline raw material, and vitrifying the mixture. CONSTITUTION:Chlorine-free raw materials of glass, e.g. SiH4, GeH4, B2H4, Si (OCH3)4, Ge(OCH3)4, etc. and fluorine-containing compounds such as SF6, CF4, HF, F2, etc. are subjected to flame hydrolysis with oxyhydrogen flame to obtain a sintered glass soot rod. The glass soot is dissovled in an aqueous solution of NaOH or Na2CO3, etc., and vitrified by melting to form a multicomponent glass preform rod. Since the F<-> ion originated from the fluorine-containing compound reduces the degree of sintering of the soot glass, the soot can be easily dissolved in the alkaline solution directly, without crushing. There is no production of harmful substances such as NaCl, and the melt-vitrification can be performed completely. The F component is evaporated and removed from the glass during the melt-vitrification process, and a transparent multicomponent glass fiber preform rod can be prepared.
