Saccharification of cellulosic substance
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: A cellulosic substance is oxidatively treated in the presence of an alkali and biochemically hydrolyzed to effect saccharification, whereby the cellulosic substance is made more susceptible to saccharification effectively through simple operations of pretreatment. CONSTITUTION: A cellulosic substance is fed from pipe 2 in the beating stage 1 and simultaneously caustic soda and steam are supplied from pipes 3 and 4, then beating is effected with a beater such as a refiner. The beaten cellulose is sent to the pretreatment tank 5 and alkali and air are introduced through pipes 6 and 7. Oxygen or ozone may be used instead of air. Additionally, steam is sent into the tank 5 through pipe 8 for heating. Such oxidative treatment in the presence of an alkali removes lignin and swells the beaten cellulose to give the raw material suitable for saccharification. The raw material is rinsed with water, sent to the saccharification stage 9, a cellulase solution is introduced from pipe 10, then saccharification is carried out. COPYRIGHT: (C)1981,JPO&Japio
