Preparation of propylene oxide
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To prepare a propylene oxide selectively without the formation of other volatile products, by irradiating propylene with light having specific wavelength in a polar solvent in the presence of SO 2 , thereby epoxidizing propylene with O 2 . CONSTITUTION: Propylene oxide is obtained by the reaction of propylene and molecular oxygen in a polar solvent in the presence of SO 2 , irradiating with light of a wavelength of ≥260nm. The polar solvent used is a compound having the first ionization potential of ≥9.5eV, and a dielectric constant of ≥4.5 at 20°C, e.g. acetonitrile, propionitrile, benzonitrile, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)1980,JPO&Japio
