Production of alpha,alpha,alpha-trifluoro-o-toluic fluoride
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: The reaction of phthaloyl difluoride with sulfur tetrafluoride is effected under pressure in the presence of hydrogen fluoride or boron trifluoride to give title compound that is used as a synthetic intermediate of o-trifluoromethyl-m'- alkoxybenzoic anilide, an agricultural bactericide. CONSTITUTION: The reaction of phthaloyl difluoride with an equimolar or slight excess amount of sulfur tetrafluoride is effected in a solvent of hydrogen fluoride or in the presence of a catalyst of hydrogen fluoride or boron trifluoride under pressure of 5W30kg/cm 2 , preferably 10W20kg/cm 2 to produce said α,α,α-trifluoro- o-toluic fluoride. The reaction temperature is 50W170°C, preferably 140W145°C. The phthaloyl difluoride is readily obtained by the reaction of readily available phthaloyl dichloride with potassium fluoride in a solvent of DMF at low temperature in high yield.
