Continuous pulverization of radioactive granular resin
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To prepare uniform fine powder of a radioactive ion exhange resin, safely and continuously, by the wet pulverization of a slurry of the radioactive granular ion exchange resin of a required concentration, wherein the flow-control valve is remote- controlled. CONSTITUTION: Waste resin 2 is slurrified with 10-2 times volume of water 3 in a tank 1 by agitation, and circulated by a centrifugal pump 7 through flow-control valves 5 and 6 at a flow rate controlled by a pressure gauge 8. The flow-control valve 9 is opened, and the slurry is transferred, at a flow rate controlled by an indicating controller 10, to the wet pulverizer 12, where the waste resin is finely pulverized. After the completion of the pulverization, washing water 14 is pumped to the system by a pump 14 to lower the level of the radioactivity of the system below the permissible level, the waste liquid 13 is discharged from the system, and the pulverized resin is taken out from the wet pulverizer 12. Since the appratuses and the valves are remote-controlled, the hazard of exposure to radioactive radiation is eliminated. COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio
