Production of glass rods for optical fibers
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To faciliteate local heating and let sintering of the soot inside be readily progressed through reaching of laser light to the soot inside by using a laser light as a heat surce and applying strip-form lase light over the entire outside cirumference of the soot with an optical system. CONSTITUTION:The axis 6 of the laser light 2 emitted from a laser oscillator 1 and the axis of a soot form glass rod 5 are sligned and the optical axis 7 of a lens 3 is parallel with the optical axis 6 but is not in aliqnment thereto. As the lens 3 is rotated about the optical axis 6, creates the luminous flux 9 of ring form 8 of its section and this is reflected by an annular concave mirror 4 and is radiated in strip form on the outside circumferential part of the soot form glass rod. Here, the beam is made to parallel light by the reflecting mirror 4 and is made to such a radiation area at which the soot surface becomes temperature sufficient for sintering when converted from the output of the laser oscillator. Hence, sintering initites from the outside circumference part, but the sintered portion becomes transparent glass body and therefore the laser light gradually reaches the soot inside, thus enabling the sintering to be progressed.
