Liquid crystal display device
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To improve the quality of display using the electro-optical effects of a liquid crystal and the optical characteristics of a dichroic mirror by speciying a multi-layer thin film of non-metal to be combined with the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION: Glass substrates 1 and 2 formed with an orientation treating layer 11 hold inbetween a mixture liquid crystal of a nematic liquid crystal and a smectic liquid crystal and is arranged in the vicinity of a background plate 30 having a black surface. The substrate 1 is equipped with a transparent electrode 19-7 whereas the substrate 2 is formed with a non-metal multi-layer thin film 25-1-R, 25-1-G and 25-1-B, which are made to reflect red, green and blue colors, respectively, and with transparent conductive film 24-1-R, 24-1-G, 24-1-B contacting therewith. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes, fluctuations are generated in the orientations of the liquid crystal molecules to scatter the light. The light scatterd is reflected on the thin films 25-1-R, 25-2-R, - - -, 25-n-R so that the red color reaches the eyes of an observer. The intensities of the red, green and blue colors are proportional to the light scattering of the liquid crystals and can be easily controlled in accordance with the level of the voltage applied.
