Abstract

(57) [Abstract] [Objective] Composed of a plurality of fabric sections having gas permeability determined by the ratio of tension in the weft direction to tension in the weft direction as defined by the contour of the inflated gas bag A vehicle occupant restraint device gas bag is provided. A gas bag, generally in the shape of a balloon, has an upper portion (10) and a lower portion (12), the lower portion having a central hole for coupling with a gas generator (14). The tension distribution of the gas bag is substantially constant due to its balloon shape. The upper part (10) facing the vehicle occupant has a low gas permeability in order to avoid injuries to the occupant due to strips and hot air. The gas permeability of the lower part (12) is at least double that of the upper part (10). The fabric portions forming the upper portion (10) and the lower portion (12) have at least approximately the same density and filament type. The cloth portions are sewn together at their outer edges.
