Coder for video signal

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a video signal with high coding efficiency with simple constitution by comparing several kinds of code quantities estimated by an estimate means, selecting one kind among processing of several kinds from the result of comparison and using the selected processing so as to code a signal. CONSTITUTION:A picture stored in a buffer memory 1 is divided into blocks of longitudinal 8Xlateral 8 picture elements by block processing devices 2, 3. Moreover, the block is divided vertically into two for each of four scanning lines for in-frame processing and divided into two at an interval of one scanning for in-field processing to form the two blocks of longitudinal 4Xlateral 8 picture elements. Signals of both the blocks are transformed by orthogonal transformation devices 4, 5 and the code quantity is estimated by using code quantity estimate devices 17, 18. The estimated code quantities are compared with a comparator 19 and the smaller code quantity is selected, A flag representing which of both the processing is selected is also outputted. A selected coefficient is quantized by a quantizer 20.
