semiconductor laser
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To shift a light-outgoing direction widely, by changing a transverse mode in a cylindrical optical resonator that emits light in an oblique direction. CONSTITUTION:A primary diffraction grating 11b in an outer area is incorporated into a cylindrical optical resonator. Light goes and comes back through a waveguide layer 10 in a direction towards the center and oscillates with the primary diffraction grating 11b to form a distributed feed back laser or distributed Bragg reflector laser. Moreover, at a tertiary diffraction grating in the centeral area, the oscillated light is emitted obliquely upward or downward. In this case, the semiconductor laser is made up of a cylindrical optical resonator, so it is possible to generate a transverse mode having an oscillating node in a specified direction. Without an oscillating node, light emission has a uniform intensity in all directions. In the case of the transverse mode with one oscillating node, intense light is emitted in two directions, and with two nodes, intense light is emitted in four directions.
