Waveguide type ring laser and waveguide type ring laser gyro
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce the size and make mass production possible by providing a circular waveguide loop having a high refractive index on a solid board which is doped with a minute quantity of elements having a gain for a specific wavelength, by guiding excited light into it, and by emitting light from the waveguide loop. CONSTITUTION:On a sheet of glass 2 for glass lasers, quartz glass, soda glass, or YIG crystals form a circular loop 3, a waveguide part 4 for letting light enter whose one end touches the loop 3, and waveguides 5, 6 for emitting light in tangential directions of the circle at a position symmetrical to the path 4. When a ring laser 1 is stationary, the frequencies of laser beams emitted from the waveguides 5, 6 becomes the same, but when the ring laser 1 itself is rotating in the direction of an arrow A or arrow B, the frequency difference becomes large in proportion to the rotational angular velocity. Mixing a clockwise light beam and an anticlockwise light beam and causing them to interfere with each other makes it possible to detect the rotational angular velocity or rotation angle from the beat frequency.
