Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To enable cells to be rapidly proliferated without the need for expensive serum and the recovery of the useful materials produced to be raised, by simultaneously immobilizing both cell growth and cell bonding factors on the surface of a polymethyl methacrylate film. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a polymethyl methacrylate (hereinafter referred to as PMMA) film is hydrolyzed to form carboxyl groups on the film followed by coupling reaction of these groups with, as condensation agent, a water-soluble carbodiimide (hereinafter referred to as WSC) such as 1-ethyl-3-(3- dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide into a carboxyl group-active PMMA film, and a cell growth factor such as insulin and a cell bonding factor such as fibronectin are added to this film to effect their simultaneous immobilization through the amide linkages. Thereby, powerful cell growth promotive action will be exerted. Also, because of no need for expensive serum, the present technique is economical, and the useful materials produced can be recovered in high yield in great quantities. Besides, reuse of said film will further improve the economy of the present technique.
