MIM liquid crystal electro-optical device and its manufacturing method
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To provide the MIM liquid crystal electrooptical device having a high effective picture element rate (opening rate) even with high-density picture elements and the process for producing this device by forming picture element electrodes as reflective electrodes and disposing MIM elements and wirings on the substrate side of the picture element electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal 104 is inserted and held between the MIM substrate 102 provided with the reflective picture element electrodes 101 and the counter substrate 103 provided with transparent electrodes 105. The transparent electrodes 105 are formed in a stripe shape corresponding to the size of the picture elements. The MIM substrate 102 consists of line-shaped signal transmission wirings 107, the MIM elements 108 consisting of a thin insulator formed in a part thereof, and the picture element electrodes 101 electrically connected thereto. The picture element electrodes 101 are electrically insulated from the line-shaped signal transmission wirings 107 by an interlayer insulator 109. The nematic liquid crystal layer 104 having 193 deg. twist angle under the conditions under which the incident light polarized to linearly polarized light is made incident to the layer, is polarized to circularly polarized light on the reflecting surface and is polarized to the linearly polarized light rotated in plane of polarization by 90 deg. from the incident light on the exit surface after the reflection is inserted and held.
