Optical deflecting device
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain both a large deflection angle and high speed by manufacturing plural waveguides which differ in equivalent refractive index on the same substrate and selecting a waveguide where light is made incident by using an optical switch. CONSTITUTION:The waveguide substrate 100 is varied in equivalent refractive index by varying the widths of the waveguides 181 - 183 between 1 and 2mum. The beam emitted by a laser 10 is converged by a lens 20 and made incident on a waveguide 110 on the substrate 100 in TE mode and light projected from the waveguide 110 is confined to a Ti-diffused area on the surface of the substrate 100 and diverged in two-dimensionally, and converted by a waveguide lens 120 into a parallel beam, which is diffracted with a surface acoustic wave generated by an electrode 140. The diffracted light is converged by a waveguide lens 170 and coupled with an end surface of one of the waveguides 181 - 183. Thus, large variation in the angle of polarization mode conversion radiation from the waveguide with the equivalent refractive index is utilized to obtain a large deflection angle and there is no mechanical operation part, so the high speed operation is attained substantially.
