Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To attain both the elimination of wavelength dependency and incidence angle dependency and size reduction by setting mutual angles of plural side wall surfaces of a column-shaped body with the flat side wall surfaces so that the total of phase differences of P-polarized light beams and S-polarized light beams of each totally reflected light beam is a specific phase difference. CONSTITUTION:The wavelength plate 23 is made of a transparent medium which projects light having a specific phase difference from incident light and the wavelength plate 23 is in a columnar shape having the flat side wall surfaces, which consist of one incidence surface, one projection surface, and total reflecting surfaces. Light from the outside 1 is made incident obliquely on the incidence surface along a surface perpendicular to the axis of the column body, but transmitted light from the incidence surface is reflected totally by the respective total reflecting surfaces in order and the final totally reflected light is made incident obliquely on the projection surface, and the mutual angles of the flanks are so set that the total of the phase differences from the S-polarized light beams and S-polarized light beams as to each totally reflected light beam is the specific phase difference. Consequently, the desired phase difference is obtained and the size is made smaller than that of a conventional Fresnel type wavelength plate.
