Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To ensure the optimum collapse of an inflated air bag at all times by providing a pressure relief valve to open when the internal pressure of a bag casing reaches the predetermined value or more, and a shutter to open after the elapse of the initiating initial time of an inflator. CONSTITUTION:When an automobile collides forward, an inflator 13 is initiated and gas pressure generated thereby is jetted toward the front (left side shown herein) of a bag case 11. Then, the gas pressure is reversed and directed backward. As a result, the air bag 14 is inflated and breaks a cover material 12 at the weakened part 12a thereof. Then, the air bag 14 bulges outside the bag case 11 and constrains crew. In this case, upon expiration of the initiating initial time of the inflator 13, the aforesaid reversed gas pressure acts on a pressure receiving part 31a and oscillates a shutter 31 backward, thereby opening the first exhaust port 22. Consequently, the valve body 24 of a pressure relief valve B opens against the force of a spring 25. According to the aforesaid construction, the inflated air bag 14 can be collapsed optimally at all times regardless of a collision condition.
