Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a liq. crystal display device fitted with an org. polymer film having satisfactory ability to orient liq. crystal molecules without rubbing and forming no electric double layer by forming an org. polymer film contg. electrically conductive transparent filaments arranged in the longitudinal direction of a transparent electrode on the surface of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:When a liq. crystal 8 is filled into the gap between a pair of substrates 1, 2 each having a striped transparent electrode to obtain a liq. crystal display device, an org. polymer film 5 contg. electrically conductive transparent filaments 7 arranged in the longitudinal direction of the electrode is formed on the surface of the substrate 2. The filaments 7 make the film 5 molecularly continuous in the longitudinal direction and discontinuous in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, apply arranged physicochemical force directly and indirectly to liq. crystal molecules, render electrical conductivity to the film 5 in the thickness direction and act so that the concentration of ions and the formation of an electric double layer are prevented. The film 5 has satisfactory ability to orient liq. crystal molecules without rubbing and the rise of the threshold voltage of the display device and the reduction of display contrast due to an electric double layer are prevented.
