Method for preparing fibrous aluminum nitride
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To efficiently and inexpensively prepare fibrous aluminum oxide by homogeneously mixing aluminum (hydro)oxide with carbon black (precursor) and heating the mixture at a prescribed temperature in a reaction oven under a nitrogen atmosphere containing a specific amount of water. CONSTITUTION:(A) Aluminum oxide, aluminum hydroxide or a mixture thereof is homogeneously mixed with (B) carbon black or an organic polymeric substance (e.g. polystyrene) producing carbon when heated. The mixture is heated at 1300-1700 deg.C on a reaction oven under a nitrogen gas atmosphere containing 200-5000ppm of water to prepare fibrous aluminum nitride, thereby permitting to efficiently cause the reaction in a relatively low temperature range and massively produce the fibrous aluminum nitride at a low cost. The prepared fibrous aluminum nitride is suitably employed as a reinforcing material for various composite uses.
