Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To negate the dispersion characteristics of an optical fiber for transmission with the dispersion characteristic of a dispersion shift fiber and eliminate the influence of the insertion loss and propagation loss possessed by the optical fiber delay equalizer by constituting the equalizer of an erbium-doped optical fiber, an optical coupler and a band-pass optical filter. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber delay equalizer is constituted of the erbium- doped optical fiber 3, the optical coupler 4 which couples exciting light to the erbium-doped optical fiber 3 and the band-pass optical fiber 5 which shuts off the exciting light and allows the passage of only the signal light. The erbium- doped optical fiber 3 has the characteristics to eliminate waveform distortions by compensating the dispersion characteristics of the optical fiber for transmission and to amplify the signal light by an induction release effect and, therefore, the fiber negates the dispersion of the optical fiber for transmission. The insertion loss and transmission loss of the optical fiber delay equalizer are decreased to a negligible level in this way.
