Corrosion-resistant lead frame

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To eliminate the surface contamination due to the galvanic potential between a Pd surface and base metal by providing an isolation layer between the base metal region and intermediate layer. CONSTITUTION: The lead frame has an isolation layer disposed between the base metal region and intermediate layer. A Pd-Ni alloy layer 38 cuts the galvanic potential coupling between a base metal 28 and Rd top layer 42 to thereby reduce the potential across an Ni layer 40 to substantially zero because the galvanic potential on the Pd top layer 42 is equal to that on the Pd-Ni alloy. This prevents ions of the base metal from moving to the top layer, resulting in no corrosion of the lead frame.
