Biphenyl derivative

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:Biphenyl derivative of formula I [R<1> and R<3> are carboxy or esterified carboxy; R<2> is H, halogen, nitro, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, cyano, halogeno (lower) alkyl or alkyl (lower) alkoxy; R<4> is lower alkyl; R<5> is hydroxy or protected hydroxy] and its salt. EXAMPLE:2-Methyl 6-(2-cyanoethyl) 3-hydroxy-5-methyl-2'-nitrobiphenyl-2,6- dicarboxylate. USE:The compound of formula I has a muscular contraction inhibiting action and is useful as e.g. a drug for treating pollakiuria. PREPARATION:For example, a compound of formula II is reacted with an oxidizing agent such as manganese dioxide in a conventional organic solvent such as chloroform affecting no reaction under room temperature or heating to give the compound of formula I wherein R<5> is OH.
