Process for preparing cyanoethyl polyamides
Abstract
Abstract Cyanoethylated polyamides are made by treating polyamides in solution or in suspension in the form of powder, granules, fibres or filaments with acrylonitrile with or without inert diluents at a temperature between 20 DEG and 90 DEG C. in the presence of a basic catalyst such as an alkali metal hydroxide or a quaternary ammonium base. Specified polyamides are poly-S -caprolactam and polyhexamethylene adipamide. Specified inert diluents are dioxan and benzene. Phenyl-b -naphthylamine may be present as an acrylonitrile polymerization inhibitor. The examples describe the reaction of acrylonitrile with:- (1) and (3) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (2) polyhexamethylene adipamide in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (4) and (5) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of trimethylphenyl ammonium ethoxide and (6) poly-S -caprolactam in the presence of triethylphenyl ammonium ethoxide.
