Abstract

Abstract 819,082. Stuffing-box substitutes; pistons, packing. BERGER, A. Oct. 18, 1956 [Oct. 24, 1955], No. 31738/56. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing for sealing axles, shafts, bearings, pistons and the.like comprises an elastic packing ring of trapezoidal section which is accommodated in an annular groove provided either in the axle or like member or a co-operating housing and is so dimensioned as to become distorted when fitted in position, the ring then lying in inclined position in the groove and making line contact at three positions with the adjacent parts. Fig. 3 shows a ring 1 with a conical bore of smaller inner diameter than the diameter d of the shaft to which it is to be fitted, so that when fitted it assumes an inclined position in the groove 5. Depending on the chosen combination of dimensions of ring and groove, the ring may either rotate with the shaft so that line-contact sealing takes place on the side walls of the groove at X, or the ring may be held within the groove by the friction of its contacting portions, the seal being effected by the inner edge of the ring at its point of contact with the shaft, or the dimensions may be such as to allow the ring to " float " rotationally. For shaft sealing in both axial directions, two mutually supporting rings may be provided as shown in Fig. 4 or the ring 2, Fig. 6, may have an inner face partly cylindrical and partly conical, to provide two shaft-contacting sealing edges when held in position in the groove 5b by a garter spring 8. In a further embodiment, Fig. 10, the ring 4 may be initially of dished form with parallel inner and outer cylindrical faces. In this embodiment, the groove 5d, of less width than the free depth of the ring, is formed in a ring member 6d detachable from the bearing housing. When used as a packing carried in grooves formed in a piston 7a, Fig. 8, the outer diameter of each ring 3 exceeds that of the bore d which is to be sealed so that distortion by compression forces the diagonally opposite edges of the ring into contact with the walls of the groove. A ball-bearing seal, Fig. 12, comprises a sealing ring 1 of similar form to that described with reference to Fig. 3 located in a groove formed between rings 6e, 6e<SP>1</SP> pressed into a recess in the outer race, the sealing lip contacting a recess formed in the inner race. Alternatively, this ring may be carried in a one-piece detachable grooved ring of the form shown in Fig. 10. A similar seal may be fitted at the opposite side of the bearing. Natural or synthetic rubber or polyamide may be used for the sealing rings and the sealing edges of the rings may be rounded instead of sharp.
