Abstract

Abstract 798,455. Ignition systems. WIPAC DEVELOPMENT, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1957 [March 20, 1956], No. 8725/56. Class 7(4) An ignition system for a multi-cylinder engine comprises a plurality of ignition transformers each having one terminal of its primary winding connected directly to earth and the other terminal connected to earth through a contact breaker, an alternating current source connected to supply current in suitable phase to the junctions of the primary windings and the contact breakers and means adapted to operate the contact breakers in suitable succession. The alternating current source may be one or .more stator coils of an alternator. In the case of motor cycles the alternator may be within the chain case. The Figure shows :an ignition arrangement for a twin cylinder four stroke engine. The contact breaker cam 12 is driven at half engine speed. The junctions between the contact breakers and the primary windings 15, 16 are connected to opposite ends of the stator winding 23 of a single phase alternator such as a permanent magnet alternator. The voltage peaks occur at about the instants of break of the contact breakers 10 and 11. Separate capacitors 14, 15 for each contact breaker may replace the single capacitor 13. This will generally be desirable with a number of cylinders greater than 2.
