Abstract 774,451. Surgical optical instruments. WOLF, R. May 26, 1955 [May 28, 1954, Oct. 13, 1954], No. 15211/55. Class 81(2) [Also in Group XX] To provide a wide angle of view the objective of the viewing system of an endoscope is in the form of a sphere, the axial ray of the viewing system passing through the centre of the sphere. Fig. 1 shows an endoscope comprising an illuminating system 5 carried in a tube 1 which also supports the objective 7 and a prism 4 directing light from the objective to the remainder of the viewing system, the slope of the sides of the prism being selectted in accordance with the line of sight desired. In a modification the lens 7 fills the whole of the end of the tube 1, the prism 4 being omitted. Fig. 4 shows a rearward-viewing endoscope in which light from the objective 7 is reflected by a mirror 10 to the prism 4 of the remainder of the viewing system.
