Improvements in and relating to floating structures
Abstract
Abstract 763,003. Floating aircraft runways. WALKER, D. W. R. April 20, 1955 [April 20, 1954], No. 11394/54. Classes 4 and 113. [Also in Groups X and XXI] In a floating structure comprising two sets of elongated substantially rigid buoyant members, the members of one set are slidable in, and pass through, transverse apertures in the members of the other set, thereby preventing longitudinal displacement of the members of said other set, and means are provided for preventing displacement of the members of said one set in the direction of their length. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment suitable for a helicopter landing platform. The buoyant members 10 may be hollow tubes, tubes filled with buoyant material, or timber baulks, the joints 11, 12 between adjacent pairs A, B and C, D being staggered relatively to one another. Each member has at least four transverse apertures 13 through which pass substantially rigid members 14, each in lengths having a male and female end for joining together on end to form one long member 14 secured at their ends to prevent movement in the direction of their length by a plate 17 and bolt 18 at one end and a nut plate at the other. The embodiment shown in Fig. 5, particularly suitable as a floating bridge, has units comprising runner members 20 having straps 21 forming spaces for transverse members 26. Units may be joined end to end by socket float members 27 comprising timber baulks 28 with sockets 29 for receiving the extending ends 22 of the runners. Wing members 30 having channels 31 engaging the ends of the transverse members 26 are joined together and to the socket float members by means of a pin 32, and are provided with a bolt 35. The structure may be covered with flexible buoyant waterproof material. Specification 744,985 is referred to.
