Apparatus for reproducing the image of an instrument dial at a remote point
Abstract
Abstract 742,983. Television. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., Sir W. G. Feb. 25, 1953 [Feb. 25, 1952], No. 4851/52. Drawings to Specification. Class. 40 (3). In an arrangement for reproducing images of instrument dials &c. at a remote point by employing light generated by a cathode-ray tube "flying-spot" " scanner " and reflected or transmitted by the dials &c. to produce corresponding vision signals in a photo-electric cell, the cell is chosen to have a maximum response characteristic in the spectral region of the light generated by the cathode-ray tube. When a number of instruments which cannot be placed together are concerned, groups of them can be scanned by individual " scanners " and photoelectric cells, the outputs of which are mixed and the scanning is so arranged that each group occupies a part only of the picture reproduced at the remote point. The instruments (e.g. instrument panel in the case of an aircraft) and the signal generating equipment should, preferably, be enclosed in a light-tight box but if visual observation of the instruments is also necessary they may be illuminated by visible light of a different wavelength to that generated by the " scanner " an optical filter passing only light of the latter wavelength being interposed in the optical path to the photo-electric cell. Signals conveying other information (e.g. for telemetry) may be combined with the vision signals. In the case of " aircraft to ground " systems the synchronizing signal equipment may be located on the ground and synchronizing signals transmitted to the aircraft to synchronize the operation thereof. The receiving equipment may include provision for recording the reproduced images by means of a cinematograph camera in addition to a direct viewing picture reproducing cathode-ray tube. Specification 432,225 is referred to.
