Abstract

Abstract 684,348. Electric weighing - apparatus. LIQUIDOMETER CORPORATION. June 8, 1950 [Nov. 14, 1949], No. 14316/50. Class 40 (i) [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for measuring the specific gravity of a liquid comprises a series of floats, each of a different specific gravity, to be immersed in the liquid so that those having a smaller specific gravity will rise, to operate switching mechanism and vary the value of an electrical element whose resultant value may be determined. This may be combined with a volume indicating device to determine the weight of liquid in a tank. Each float 22, Fig. 1, is contained in a separate chamber 20, and on rising rests against stops 26 thereby short-circuiting a predetermined portion of a resistance, 30, whose resultant value may be determined. The rising float may alternatively be attached to a pivoted arm so that the other end of the arm closes a switch contact, directly or indirectly as in Figs. 5, 6 where the float 102 is attached by an arm 100 to a hinged frame 104 supporting two magnets 108, which on moving attract with them two iron pole pieces 128 attached to a switch rocker arm 126, whereby contacts 129 short-circuit spring contacts 130. In other embodiments the floats are used to short-circuit parts of an inductance in a tuned circuit whose frequency is measured, or alternatively, Fig. 10, the floats 244, made of ferrous material, modify the inductance of coils 240 on rising to affect the resonant frequency. To determine the weight of liquid in a tank, Fig. 8, the position of a float 164 varies the position of a permeable core 166 in a coil 162, which is one arm of a bridge circuit, so that the bridge output indicates the level of the liquid in the tank. This output, across' transformer 182, is shunted by a resistance 152-158 whose value depends, as above described, on the specific gravity of the liquid, so that the indicator reading shows the weight of liquid in the tank. The bridge arm can be a variable condenser, and the varying specific gravity of the liquid could be compensated by a variable inductance in series with the bridge output transformer.
